"Unveiling the Nutritional Powerhouses Hidden in Our Backyards: Embracing Local Monsoon Wild Vegetables!"
From the earth to our plates, monsoon wild vegetables pack a nutritional punch like no other. However, in today's era of instant foods and frozen vegetables, we have forgotten the essence of natural seasonal sources of nutrition.
On Sunday, 21st July 2024, SukhaSamruddha Lifestyle Foundation in collaboration with Nirmal Vishwa organised an awareness based exhibition cum sales of "Goa's local wild green vegetables" at Vishwa Hindu Parishad Hall, Ponda - Goa from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.
More than 170 people attended this event. The exhibition supported by the honourable members of Goa Biodiversity Management Committee included a well informed display of a plethora of traditional Goan wild vegetables and delicacies were presented such as Takla (Taikila in Konkani), Alu, Pewga, Suran, Mayalu, Kurdu, Pendhrachi Bhaji, Kudya Shenganchi Bhaji, Valachi Bhaji, Killache Lonche, Alu Dahi Kadi, Alu Vadi, Valache Parathe along with nutritious Nachnichi(Ragi) Bhakri. These delicacies were prepared and served to the participants by some talented homemaker women from Valpoi-Sattari, Goa. This event was facilitated by Mr. Datta Naik.
Moreover, well-known Ayurveda Acharya and Vaidya Ms. Madhavilata Dixit spoke on the medicinal importance and relevance of these seasonal wild vegetables in Ayurveda and our day to day dietary nutrition. These food items were served on traditional plates made from leaves called “chadivda” to all the dignitaries present and the participants.
On the auspicious occasion of Gurupournima, the event was further graced by the presence of the “Guru-Shishya” pair, renowned environmentalists and researchers, Mr. Rajendra Kerkar and Mr. Suryakant Gaonkar. Being an avid researcher on wild vegetables himself, Mr. Gaonkar expressed his personal takeaway on the said topic.
Many of the above-mentioned wild vegetables were also placed as saplings for public display and study. The director of Sukh Samruddha Lifestyle Foundation, Shri. Rajendra Kirloskar conducted the vote of thanks and expressed his gratitude towards the people of Ponda to have graced this event in huge numbers despite the heavy rains. Smt. Gulab Borkar, Chairman, Nirmal Vishwa (Goa) and Vastu Visharad Mr. Kamlakar Sadhale had also graced the occasion with Mr. Pradeep Kamat (Secretary - Nirmal Vishwa, Goa) as the host for the event.
